The best places to head along the western coast are hard to pinpoint; there are so many delightful spots. Langebaan is a popular favourite among Capetonians; it has a stunning coastline, busy little town and numerous fishing spots suitable for experts and beginners alike. Fishing enthusiasts love the area for its stumps, elf shad and kabeljou population. Popular spots are the Palletjies lagoon and Konstabelkop. Other than fishing, Langebaan offers a variety of activities for the whole family. One can organise hiking, horse-riding, kite-surfing or quad biking among others.
The east coast is made all the more enticing by its temperate weather and fantastic beaches in both the north and south. If you are heading north, St Lucia and Cape Vidal are two places that boast fantastic fishing and surfing conditions. Try your hand at angling and catch a delicious Dorado or sailfish.
Here is a recipe for a truly scrumptious Dorado:
- Pre-heat oven to grill and set on medium heat
- Wash and clean your fish
- Coat fish with 2 tbsp of butter, both inside and out
- Cut into smaller pieces
- Place pieces on medium-sized piece of tin foil
- Squeeze ½ lemon over the pieces
- Then sprinkle 1 tsp of crushed garlic over them
- Cover fish totally with foil and place into oven to cook for 20-25 minutes.
This dish is best enjoyed with a white wine like the Two Oceans Sauvignon Blanc . The zesty, tropical bouquet is sure to bring out the flavours in grilled fish and seafood.
St Lucia is alive with wildlife; you may even encounter manta ray swimming side by side in the surf. In addition, one can dive at the St Lucia estuary, hike one of the many trails or visit the amazing slice of African life, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Cape Vidal is located within the 38,000 hectares that make up the park and is a perfect getaway spot. Stay in a log cabin located within the lush vegetation that borders the beach and escape from the world.
