On the 24th of September South Africans across the country celebrate Heritage Day by lighting fires and braaing their favourite meat. Don’t stay at home on this day; rent a minibus and take your family and friends out and have a braai under tall shady trees at some of the loveliest parks around Johannesburg. Why rent a minibus you may ask? What else can accommodate braai stands, the grill, charcoal, cooler boxes and anything else you may need?
Emmarentia Dam – Greenside
This beautiful park is situated only 6km outside Sandton and is opposite the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. Fishing is allowed at the dam where bass, barbell and carp can be caught. Instead of braaing meat for Heritage Day, why not make use of the fish you caught and cook that instead? Remember to bring your fishing licence with!
Zoo Lake – Randburg
Zoo Lake is directly opposite the Johannesburg Zoo and is a popular destination for family picnics and outdoor fun. With lush lawn, green shady trees and open spaces, Zoo Lake is the ultimate spot for a day of relaxation. Bring your braai goodies and gazebo to take part in the fun of Braai Day. There’s a tennis court on the premises for those who fancy a game during the course of the day.
Gillooly’s – Bedfordview
Gillooly’s Farm has plenty to offer day visitors seeking a fun family day out. There are picnic spots with braai facilities, a children’s playground and a hiking trail for those who wish to explore the area.
Rietvlei Farm – between Alberton and Mulbarton
Kids will love Rietvlei Farm for the tractor rides, putt-putt and pony rides. This is indeed a venue filled with fun and laughter in the sun. Here you can bring your own braai or hire one from them.
Pines Resort – Krugersdorp
With an Olympic-sized swimming pool and waterslides, kids are sure to have a whale of a time! Facilities at Pines Resort include a picnic and braai area, jungle gyms, as well as a tuck shop if you’re feeling peckish (or you forgot your firelighters and charcoal).
